The service is good and the folks are friendly. The kind of place that seems familiar the first time you come in and would be a have to stop if you had grown up in the area.
I say nostalgia because when you walk in the door at least forty or more years disappear. Wood floors, large lunch counter and small tables throughout. Old soda posters and ads on the walls. Collectibles of all sorts on every surface not devoted to serving food.
Decent eats for a little money. Everything combined makes this worth a stop. I have had better chili dogs but never had quite the total experience you get here.
Since the place got bought by new owners, Skeeters isn't the same. They don't use Valley Dale hot dogs, and the menu has been "updated" with new items. The vibe is just different and the staff is just...not the same as it used to be. None of it was gross, just definitely not as flavorful as a few years ago.
Recommended.
Step back in time for great hot dogs and friendly staff. They also have great deserts!
I can't talk about everything they serve. I have eaten here once. I had a couple of slaw dogs and my dad had a couple all the way. We shared an order of fries. The dogs are nostalgic as well, they are bright red like almost all dogs were before the red dye scare of the late sixties. Apparently Virginia and North Carolina never let that scare get to 'em, they both still got old fashioned red hots.
Came in for a late breakfast. Counter guy seemed more or less indifferent to me. Only a group of six folks besides myself in the place. When asked if I wanted coffee I requested hot choc instead. None available so I asked for milk. Counter dude plops a pint carton on the counter - no glass. Later, he sets a fork and knife atop the counter for my use. Hash browns seemed a problem and what I eventually received were not good. My eggs and sausage weren’t any better...
To top my experience off, a copy of the towns weekly paper on the counter featured (on three of it’s six pages) a single rambling never-ending letter to the editor extolling Trump’s “accomplishments” since taking office. Really y’all?? Starting prominently on the front page above the fold??? I almost lost my not too well prepared greasy eggs and heated frozen sausage and hash browns!
Dude at the counter: You may have sold nine million hot dogs since 1925, but your breakfasts suck. Y’all just heat up frozen stuff (sausage/hash browns), fail to talk with your customers if you don’t know them, and think we like to eat with utensils placed directly on your well worn counters. A little courtesy, better sanitary practices, and improved faire could go a long way! I hope for your sake those hot dogs are as good as you think they are...
This is nostalgia eats.
Normally, I love this place and was really looking forward to it, but this time the owners were morose and stressed, the counter was sparse compared to last time, and adding a topping they don't normally add became such an issue that I just gave up. I enjoyed the dogs and the decor, as usual. But guys, if someone asks for BBQ sauce don't make them feel like they asked for truffles and say how that ain't the Skeeter's way. Just say you don't have it. ;)
